This year I've stepped out of my comfort zone, and started doing headshots in 100% natural light. There is a well known photographer and educator that built her business entirely on natural light, so I did learn a lot from her, but I was still nervous to make this leap. I have to say though, I absolutely love the softness of natural light and the colors that natural light brings out in my clients eyes.
My goal with headshots is to make sure my clients look and feel confident, and importantly walk away with photos that they love.
Most of the headshots I do are for pageants. My first pageant headshot was sponsored and I watched the photographer go through his Photoshop quickly, changing everything about me, taking away all skin texture, making my eyes bigger, and leaving me with an image of me that looked like a porcelain doll. Needless to say, I was too embarrassed to use the image and had a friend take my photo instead.
The important thing about pageant headshots, is that each contestant looks like their photograph. Paperwork, headshots, and social media are the first impressions judges have of each contestant before they get to interview them. So it's very important to make a great impression and walk into the judges room, looking like the woman in the photograph.
I think that is one of the things I love so much about the natural light. It brings out the natural colors in eyes, and softly illuminates skin, complimenting all skin tones. So here are my most recent headshots that I'm proud to say are 100% natural light.
